Nel 1871 Edward Tylor pubblicò il saggio Primitive Culture in cui in apertura presentava la prima e più importante definizione sistematica del concetto di cultura.
«La cultura, o civiltà, intesa nel suo ampio senso etnografico, è quell'insieme complesso che include la conoscenza, le credenze, l’arte, la morale, il diritto, il costume e qualsiasi altra capacità e abitudine acquisita dall'uomo come membro di una società.»When Ruth Benedict began her work in anthropology in 1921, the term "culture," as we use it today for the systematic body of learned behavior which is transmitted from parents to children, was part of the vocabulary of a small and technical group of professional anthropologists. That today the modern world is on such easy terms with the concept of culture, that the words "in our culture" slip from the lips of educated men and women almost as effortlessly as do the phrases that refer to period and to place, is in very great part due to this book.
